Chimpanzee trekking is available in several locations in Uganda, including forests, national parks, and a sanctuary.
Forests
- Budongo Forest
- Located in Murchison Falls National Park, this forest has about 100 chimpanzees. Visitors can also experience chimpanzee habituation during the day.
- Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve
- Located on the outskirts of Queen Elizabeth National Park, this forest is primarily used for research.
- Kyambura Gorge
- Located on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park, this tropical rainforest is home to about 16 chimpanzees.
National parks
- Murchison Falls National Park: Home to over 600 chimpanzees in the Budongo, Kaniyo Pabidi, and Rabongo forests.
- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: A wilderness area that is home to a variety of mammals, birds, butterflies, and frogs.
- Semiliki National Park: Home to a small population of chimpanzees in the Semliki Valley.
Sanctuary
- Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary: Located on a small forested island in Lake Victory near Entebbe, this sanctuary is home to about 40 rescued chimpanzees.
Tips for trekking
- You must be at least 15 years old to trek with chimpanzees.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers.
- Wear waterproof boots or hiking shoes.
- Bring insect repellent.
- Bring bottled water for drinking.
