Day 2 | Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi

Today is the day for gorilla trekking. Prepare for an unforgettable encounter with one of Bwindi’s gentle giants: the rare mountain gorilla. For many, this is the highlight of their Ugandan adventure. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, a unique feature among African forests. It also hosts five other species of primates, 113 mammals, over 200 butterfly species, and 360 bird species.

You will track one of nine habituated gorilla family groups that can tolerate human presence briefly each day. Along the way, your guide will highlight signs of previous gorilla activity, including dung, nests, and chewed bamboo shoots. The tracking journey involves navigating forested slopes, intertwined vines, bushes, and bamboo.

The tracking can take 2 to 7 hours. Once the gorillas are located, your group will have one hour to observe and interact with them. Meeting a mountain gorilla is a profoundly humbling and emotional experience—a fantastic opportunity to get close to Uganda’s “Gorillas in the Mist.”
