Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest national parks of Kenya, covering approximately 13,747 square kilometers, it is among the large protected areas of the country known for protecting the famous Man eaters-lions, Tsavo is located in the southern part of Kenya nearing its border with Tanzania. It is one of the most less visited national parks, it is a gym of wildlife commonly known for the red dust elephants, the conservation area used to be one big park together with the Tsavo west until the main road passed through the park making it have two sections.

Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo National Park is bisected into two by the river Tsavo after which it gets its name, initially before the division the conservation area was as big as 22,000 square kilometers, it is being managed under the Kenya wildlife service. Two main rivers act as water catchments areas for animals of the national park.

Tsavo national park has a history attached to a terrible history when the national park was infested by man-eating lions during the construction of the East African Railway, the lions attacked workers on the railway and Killed many of them. Tsavo national park is dominated by open savannah. Angelically placed with dotted riverine forest along the banks of the river and acacia trees among the grasses. They are habitats for animals like the African elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, Black rhinos, leopards, lions to mention a few, the conservation area has an incredible bird list with over 500 types of birds examples include the Somali Ostrich, Taita falcon, Vulturine guineafowl, Slender-tailed nightjar, Rufous chatterer, Red-bellied parrot, Northern brown bull, Pamnganilongclaw, Martial eagle, Lesser kestrel, African Finfoot, Fisher’s starling, Black-faced sandgrouse.

Major attractions of the conservation area include the Lugard falls, named after the first European to discover them, the Mudanda Rocks dating back into history to the stone age era, the great water catchment areas for the vegetation around the rocks, and grazing animals, the Aruba dam is one of the attractions of the park, it was built in 1952 along river vio, the 300 kilometer Yatta plateau marks the longest run of Lava in the world making Tsavo national park unique than no other conservation area, popular park activities include birding, Game drives both night and day in search of wildlife, day drives begin the early morning in search of risers most the big cats, Night drives are conducted in search of Nocturnal species of the conservation area.Tsavo forms the largest part of Kenya’s conservation areas.

The park is the only east African conservation area that can be accessed by train, it is accessible by road as well passing through the beautiful Maasi villages, it is approximately 233 square kilometers from Nairobi town, and 250 kilometers north of Mombasa when you access the aprk through the Mombasa Nairobi main road, there are several airstrips around the conservation area including the vio and Mapewo, charter flights can be organized to the park.
