JOURNEY OVERVIEW

Explore three pristine wildlife areas in Tanzania, with a chance to witness the Great Migration during your 12 Day Tanzania Fly-in Safari and Zanzibar Retreat. The sight of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras thundering across the plains is spectacular, and the Mara River crossing is one of the most breathtaking natural events in wildlife viewing. With dust exploding, lions stalking their prey, gigantic crocodiles, and fast-flowing wild rivers, this experience is sensational, impressive, and dramatic. This is one of the challenges of the Great Migration.

Day 1 | Arusha – Tarangire National Park

After breakfast at your hotel, your tour will depart for Tarangire National Park as your first exploration of your 12 Day Tanzania Fly-in Safari and Zanzibar Retreat. This park is famous for its massive baobab trees and large herds of elephants. Although relatively small, Tarangire has a significant wildlife population rivaling Ngorongoro. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch during your safari drive and have plenty of time to explore the national park, observe wildlife, and take photos. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be at your chosen lodge.

Day 2 | Full Day in Tarangire National Park

This day will be spent entirely on game viewing, exploring the park’s vast habitats and landscapes up to the Silalei swamp. During the dry season, this area offers green pastures and water for grazers, attracting predators as well. From June to November, during the seasonal migration of wildebeest and zebras, the park comes alive with possibly the highest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti National Park, as well as the largest population of elephants per square kilometer in the world. Other possible sightings include lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, and buffalo. If you’re lucky, you may also see the rare wild dogs. In the late afternoon, enjoy bush sundowner drinks prepared by your guide.

Day 3 | Tarangire National Park – Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, you will transfer to Lake Manyara National Park. This small national park is rich in wildlife, and the bird-watching experience will be rewarding for both enthusiasts and first-time viewers. One of your main quests will be to spot the tree-climbing lions, and the park also features a large flock of beautiful pink flamingos around the lake. You will have lunch at a picnic site. You will drive to Ngorongoro Neptune Lodge in the late evening for dinner.

Day 4 | Full Day in Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Today, you will drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater. The grass steppes and acacia forests are home to almost all the species found in the East African savannah. Within a few hours, you may spot four of the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. After an extensive game-viewing experience and a picnic lunch in the crater, you will leave the Ngorongoro Crater in the afternoon and travel back to Karatu for another night at Ngorongoro Neptune Lodge.

Today, you will set off for Serengeti National Park. After passing the crater highlands, you will soon witness the vast plains of the southern Serengeti, understanding the meaning of “Serengeti,” which translates to “endless plain.” You will visit a site notable for many archaeological discoveries, including the estimated 1.7-million-year-old Zinjanthropus boisei fossil. A small museum overlooks the gorge, where a guide will share the story of Leakey’s research and findings.

After this, we will proceed to the Serengeti, where you can expect to see a range of wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, topi, and Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles. The Serengeti is also famous for hosting the largest animal migration on the planet, depending on the time of year and the location of the herds.
